Butea adalah salah satu genus tumbuhan berbunga yang termasuk dalam famili kacang (Fabaceae). Di dalamnya terdiri dari lima spesies asli anak benua India, Indocina, Tibet, dan Cina selatan.[1] Terkadang dianggap hanya memiliki dua spesies saja yakni Butea monosperma (Palasa) dan Butea superba,[2] atau diperluas hingga mencakup empat atau lima spesies.[3] Butea juga merupakan inang bagi serangga lak (famili Kerridae), yang menghasilkan lak alami.[4]
Taksonomi
Namanya diambil dari nama John Stuart, Earl of Bute ke-3 (1713-1792), yakni seorang anggota parlemen, perdana menteri selama satu tahun, dan patronator botani.[5] William Roxburgh mendirikan genus ini pada tahun 1795, tetapi nomen tersebut menjadi tidak valid. Selanjutnya Carl Ludwig Willdenow memvalidasi nama genus ini pada tahun 1802.
