Fungsi
Elastase membentuk subfamili protease serin yang menghidrolisis banyak protein selain elastin. Manusia memiliki enam gen elastase yang menyandi protein yang secara struktural serupa, yaitu elastase 1, 2, 2A, 2B, 3A, dan 3B. Seperti kebanyakan elastase manusia, elastase 2A disekresikan dari pankreas sebagai zimogen. Pada spesies lain, elastase 2A telah terbukti secara preferensial membelah protein setelah residu leusin, metionin, dan fenilalanin. Literatur klinis yang mendeskripsikan aktivitas elastase 1 manusia di pankreas sebenarnya merujuk pada elastase 2A.[7]
