Cathartes adalah sebuah genus burung pemakan bangkai berukuran sedang hingga besar dalam famili hering Dunia Baru (Cathartidae). Tiga spesies hidup yang diklasifikasikan kedalam genus ini tersebar luas di Amerika. Terdapat satu spesies punah yang diketahui dari Kuba kala Kuarter.[3]
Nama genusnya adalah kata bahasa Yunani καθαρτής yang berarti "pemurni", yang merujuk kepada peran hering-hering sebagai "pembersih" yang "membersihkan" bangkai membusuk di alam.
