Lowercase adalah bentuk ekstrem dari genre musik ambien[1][2] minimalis. Genre musik ini banyak memanfaatkan suara-suara yang sangat sunyi (biasanya bahkan tidak terdengar) untuk diperkuat hingga tingkat yang ekstrem. Seniman minimalis Steve Roden mempopulerkan aliran musik ini dengan albumnya yang berjudul Forms of Paper. Album ini berisi suara gesekan, garukan, serta suara saat membalik dan memegang kertas dengan berbagai cara. Rekamannya ini didedikasikan untuk Perpustakaan Umum Los Angeles cabang Hollywood.[3]
