Myxococcus adalah sebuah genus bakteri pada familia Myxococcaceae. Myxococcus merupakan sebuah bakteri kemoorganotrof pembentuk spora yang merupakan sebuah aerob obligat. Mereka berbentuk batang memanjang dengan ujung yang membulat atau meruncing, serta tidak memiliki flagela. Selnya bergerak dengan melayang dan dapat mendahului bakteri lainnya. Genus ini sudah diisolasi dari tanah.
Setidaknya sebelas spesies sudah diidentifikasikan dengan pasti pada akhir 2020, dan masing-masing sudah dicirikan sampai titik tertentu. Selain menggunakan tes biokimia tradisional, genom dari beberapa spesies sudah dibandingkan menggunakan pengurutan genom. Pendekatan ini memberi bukti bahwa genus ini, seperti genera bakteri lainnya, memiliki urutan gen inti yang ditemukan pada semua anggota dari genus ini, beserta dengan beberapa yang terbatas ke satu spesies. Sehingga, identitas dari Myxococcus terus berubah. Sebuah contoh saat suatu taksonomi dapat berubah adalah perbandingan dari pengurutan genom dan tes biokimia menunjukkan bahwa M. xanthus dan M. virecens tidak dapat dibedakan.[1]
