Proailurus adalah sebuah genus felid punah yang hidup di Eropa dan Asia sekitar 25-30,8 juta tahun lalu pada masa Oligosen akhir dan Miosen. Fosil-fosil dari Proailurus telah ditemukan di Mongolia, Jerman dan Spanyol.
Proailurus lemanensis adalah hewan yang kecil, sedikit lebih besar ukurannya dari kucing rumahan, dengan bobot sekitar 9 kg. Hewan ini memiliki ekor panjang, mata yang besar, serta gigi dan cakar yang tajam, degan proporsi yang serupa dengan viverrid modern. Cakarnya dapat dimasukkan dalam kadar tertentu. Seperti viverrid, hewan ini setidaknya sebagian arboreal.[1]
Proailurus dianggap oleh banyak ahli sebagai kucing "sejati" pertama dan leluhur dari seluruh famili kucing. Kebanyakan riset mendukung hal ini, menempatkan Proailurus sebaagi anggota basal dari Felidae.[2] Satu studi filogeni tahun 2005 menempatkannya sebagai anggota basal pada Feliformia,[3] tetapi studi-studi belakangan tidak mendukung hal ini.[4]
