Sarcococca, yang dijuluki sweet box atau Christmas box,[1][2] adalah genus tumbuhan berbunga dalam famili Buxaceae. Tumbuhan ini asli Asia timur dan tenggara, serta Himalaya, dengan satu spesies asli Amerika Tengah. Tumbuhan ini merupakan semak hijau abadi yang tumbuh lambat, monoecious, dengan tinggi 1–2 m (3–7 ft). Daunnya tumbuh berseling, dengan panjang 3–12 cm dan lebar 1–4 cm.
Distribusi dan habitat
Hingga Januari 2025, genus Sarcococca mencakup 15 spesies yang diakui.[3][4] Genus ini terutama asli Asia, dengan lebih dari separuh spesies Sarcococca berasal dari Tiongkok,[5] namun satu spesies (Sarcococca conzattii) berasal dari Meksiko bagian selatan (Oaxaca) dan Guatemala.[6][7]
Karakteristik fisik
Tumbuhan ini menghasilkan bunga putih yang harum, sering kali pada musim dingin. Buahnya berupa buah batu berwarna merah atau hitam yang mengandung 1–3 biji. Beberapa spesies dibudidayakan sebagai tanaman penutup tanah atau pagar rendah di area yang lembap dan teduh.[8] Jumlah kromosom dasar untuk genus ini adalah 14 (2n = 28).[9]
Asal nama
Nama genus Sarcococca berasal dari bahasa Yunani σάρξ (sárx) dan κόκκος (kókkos) yang berarti "buah beri berdaging", merujuk pada buahnya yang berwarna hitam.[10]
