সঙ্গম যুগে তামিলকমমৌর্য সাম্রাজ্যের দক্ষিণাংশে তামিলকমের অবস্থান, আনু. খ্রিস্টপূর্ব ২৫০ অব্দতামিলকম বলতে প্রাচীন তামিল জাতির বাসভূমিকে বোঝায়। অধুনা তামিলনাড়ু , কেরল , পুদুচেরি , লক্ষদ্বীপ এবং অন্ধ্রপ্রদেশ ও কর্ণাটকের দক্ষিণাঞ্চল তামিলকমের অন্তর্গত ছিল।[ ১] তোলকাপ্পিয়ম তামিল ছিল স্বাভাবিক ভাষা[ note ১] [ note ২] চের , চোল ও পাণ্ড্য রাজ্য। সঙ্গম যুগে তামিল সংস্কৃতি তামিলকমের বাইরে প্রসার লাভ করতে শুরু করে। প্রাচীন তামিল জনবসতি শ্রীলঙ্কা (শ্রীলঙ্কান তামিল ) ও মালদ্বীপেও (গিরাবরু ) পাওয়া যায়।
