Asteranthos brasiliensis je vrsta cvjetnice u monotipskom rodu Asteranthos, zasebne porodica Scytopetalaceae, redu Ericales, razred Magnoliopsida, divizija Tracheophyta.[1]
U IUCN klasifikaciji je svrstavaju kao NT (smanjen rizik) kategoriju vrsta.[2][3] [4]
Vrsta raste na pjeskovitom tlu uz rijeke sa redovnim poplavama. Rasprostranjena je u sjevernoj Amazoniji Brazila i južnoj Venezueli u udarnim poljima Rio Negro i Orinoco.
Asteranthos brasiliensis jedina je vrsta iz roda Asteranthos i ranije se često smatralo da pripada monotipskoj porodici Asteranthaceae. Sada je smještena u potporodicu Asteranthoideae koja se inače nalazi samo u zapadnoj Africi. Sjemenke se šire sa plodom koji pliva u vodi pa se smatra da se iz Afrike, morskim strujama, raširirila do ušća i duž rijeka Amazon i Essequibo.
Prema drugim izvorima, Asteranthos pripada porodici Lecythidaceae. Jedina vrsta: Asteranthos brasiliensis Desf., porijeklom je iz Brazila, Kolumbije i Venecuele. Opisao ga je René Louiche Desfontaines, a objavljeno u Mémoires du Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle 6: 9 godine 1820.[5]
Opis
Iako je u svom arealu učestala, raste samo u poplavnim šumama, rjeđe je pod ljudskom okupacijom. Ima upečatljive žute cvjetove.
Naraste do visine od 15 m. Listovi su rasuti i kožasti, duguljasti, dugi 4–13 cm i široki 2–4,5 cm. Cvjetovi su veliki i pojedinačni u pazisima listova stabljike, promjera od 12–18 mm. Plod je dug do 2 cm, a sadrži samo jednu sjemenku.
