Eli Whitney bio je američki izumitelj koji je otkrio mašinu za čišćenje pamuka.[1][2][3][4]
Biografija
Rođen je 8. decembra 1756. u Westboroughu kao sin farmera. Završio je Univerzitet Yale 1792. i postao član "Phi Beta Društva". Dana 6. januara 1817. vjenčao se sa Henriettom Edwards, s kojom je imao četvero djece. Preminuo je 8. januara 1856.
Karijera
Whitney je najpoznatiji po dvjema inovacijama koje su imale značajan utjecaj na Sjedinjene Američke Države sredinom 19. stoljeća: izumu pamučnog čistača (1793) i zalaganju za upotrebu zamjenjivih dijelova u proizvodnji. Na američkom Jugu pamučni čistač revolucionirao je obradu pamuka i dao novi zamah ropstvu. Suprotno tome, na Sjeveru je primjena zamjenjivih dijelova temeljito promijenila proizvodnu industriju te uveliko doprinijela pobjedi Unije u Američkom građanskom ratu.[5]
