Piperaceae je porodica bibera iz reda Piperales. Uključuje 13 rodova sa 2.658 priznatih vrsta. Najvažniji je tipski rod Piper, sa 1.457 vrsta. U njemu je i ekonomski najznačajnija vrsta porodice: začinska vrsta Piper nigrum čija je domovina Indija.[1]
Ova grupa sadrži 3.600 priznatih vrsta iz 13 rodova. Ogromna većina može se naći u dva glavna roda: Piper (2.000 vrsta) i Peperomia (1600 vrsta).[2][3]
Biberovke su nisko drveće, grmovi i drvenaste povijuše, trajnice ili jednogodišnje biljke. Plodovi su bobice, karakterističnog oštrog okusa, koji mu daje alkaloid piperin.
Taksonomija
APG III sistem 2009. godine prepoznaje ovu porodicu i dodeljuje je u red Piperales u neiskorištenom kladusu Magnoliidi. Porodica se sastoji od pet rodova: Piper, Peperomia, Zippelia, Manekia i Verhuellia. Ranije prepoznati pacifički rod Macropiper, nedavno je pripojen u Piper.[4][5] Samain et al. (2010) iz roda Verhuellia odvojili su lozu Piperaceae.
