Podatak je jednostavna izolovana, neobrađena činjenica koja ima neko značenje.[1] Podatak može biti:
Podatak (datum — za jedninu i data — za množinu) u prevodu sa latinskog jezika znači "nešto što je dato".
Podatak može postojati u bilo kojem obliku, bio upotrebljiv ili ne.
Podatak je sastavljen od:
- značenja (naziv i opis značenja određenog svojstva)
- vrijednosti (mjera i iznos)
- vremena
