Prije toga, STK35L1 je imenovan kao Clik1 (CLP36 interaktivna kinaza 1) na osnovu studije koja je pokazala povezanost STK35 sa CLP36, nakon prekomjerne ekspresije oba proteina u osteosarkomskim ćelijama.[6][7] Gen Clik1 kojeg su opisali Vallenius et al. kodira protein od 501 aminokiselina. Funkcije
STK35L1 se pretežno nalazi u jedrui i jedarcetu. Jedarni aktin identificiran je kao novi vezujući partner STK35L1.[8] Međutim, može stupiti u interakciju s PDLIM1 / CLP-36 u citoplazmi i lokalizirati se u vlakna aktinskog stresa. STK35L1 regulira ekspresiju CDKN2A i inhibira prelazak G1- u S-fazu. Osiromašenjem STK35L1 siRNK oštećenim endotelom, migracija ćelija STK35L1 može djelovati kao centralna kinaza koja povezuje ćelijski ciklus i migraciju endotelnih ćelija.
