Terminalna dlaka
Kod ljudi, terminalna dlaka gusta je i dugačka, kao ona koja raste na vlasištu, u usporedbi s vunastom, koja raste negdje drugdje.[1][2] Tokom puberteta, povećanje nivoa androgenih hormona uzrokuje da se vunaste dlačice zamijene terminalnom dlakom u određenim dijelovima ljudskog tijela.[3] Ovi dijelovi će imati različit nivo osjetljivosti na androgene, prvenstveno iz porodice testosterona.[4]
Na takve hormone posebno su osjetljive stidne površine, kao i pazuh, u kojem će se razviti pazušna dlakavost.[5] Stidna i pazušna dlakavost razvit će se i na muškarcima i na ženama, do te mjere da se kvalificiraju kao sekundarne spolne oznake,[6] iako će muškarci općenito razviti terminalnu dlaku na više područja. To uključuje dlakavost lica, dlakavost grudi, trbuha, nogu i ruku i stopala.[7] S druge strane, kod žena može se zadrži veći dio vunastih dlačica.[8]
Ove dlake su prisutne kod velikih majmuna, ali ne i kod malih majmuna poput gibona što dokazuje evolucijsku divergenciju.[9]
