Valanginij – u geološkoj vremenskoj skali – jest geološko doba ili stratigrafski stadij rane ili donje krede. Trajao je između prije 139,8 ± 3,0 i 132,9 ± 2,0 miliona godina. Nastupio je iza berisija, a iza njega slijedio je hauterivijski stadij donje krede.[2]
Stratigrafske definicije
Valanginij je prvi put opisao i imenovao Édouard Desor, 1853. Imenovao ga je je po Valanginu, malom gradu sjeverno od Neuchâtela u Jurskim planinama u Švicarskoj.
Baza valanginija nalazi se pri prvom pojavljivanju kalpionelidne vrste Calpionellites darderi u stratigrafskom stupcu. Globalni referentni profil (GSSP) u 2009. godini još nije bio imenovan.
Vrhunac valanginija (baza hauterivija) nalazi se prvom pojavljivanju amonitskog roda Acanthodiscus.
Potpodjela
Valanginij je često podijeljen na donji i gornji podstadij. Gornji započinje sa prvom pojavljivanjem amonitne vrste Saynoceras verrucosum i glavne morske transgresije Va3.
U tetiskom domenu, valanginijska faza sadrži pet amonitnih biozona:

- Neokomiti peregrinus
- Saynoceras verrucosum
- Busnardoites campylotoxus
