A Savage War of Peace: Algeria, 1954–1962 is a book by Alistair Horne and first published by Viking Press in 1977. The book covers the background, events and aftermath of the Algerian War (1954–1962).[1][2]
Structure
The work contains normal front material and an author's preface. The book is divided into two unequal parts: A small introductory section, Part One: Prelude, 1830-1854 containing chapters 1–3; followed by Part Two: The War, 1954–1958, which contains most of the work, from chapters 4–25. The book contains a number of appedices including an afterward, a bibliography, and chronology of events. Later editions contain an updated preface by the author.[3]

Sir Alistair Allan HorneCBEFRSL (9 November 1925 – 25 May 2017)[8] was a British historian and academic best known for his works about armed conflicts involving 19th- and 20th-century France, including his classic about the Algerian War, A Savage War of Peace. A former spy and journalist, Horne wrote more than 20 books on travel, history, and biography.
