Alistair Dove
Alistair Dove (born January 27, 1974, Melbourne, Australia) is an Australian-American scientist and current CEO of the Museum of Science and History in Jacksonville, Florida.[1] Alistair Dove studied marine biology, parasitology, and whale sharks.[2] Prior to becoming CEO, he served as vice president of research and conversation at the Georgia Aquarium, where he researched whale sharks, water quality, parasites, marine health, among other topics.[3] He focuses on studying the biology of whale sharks to learn more about their life, history, and other related topics.[2] While researching, Dr. Dove found an abundance of whale sharks in Mexico.[4][5] Dove attended the University of Queensland, Australia and in 1994 earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Parasitology and Zoology.[2][6][4] He also obtained his PhD in the study of Parasitology, and Microbiology.[2][6] Work and researchWhile in Australia, Dr. Alistair Dove researched parasites in invasive fish species. He moved to the United States in 2000 and became a part of the Wildlife Conservation Society, Stony Brook University, Columbia University, and Cornell University.[3][6] When Dr. Alistair Dove joined the Georgia Aquarium team in 2006, where he was appointed as the Water Quality Lab manager. At this position, he studied and focused on researching the quality and health on water and its effects on Marine life. In 2009, he switched roles and joined the Research and Conservation program.[3] Dr. Alistair Dove is a huge reason why this program is as massive and successful as it is today. Dr. Dove went to Mexico, the Galapagos, and St Helena to study the migratory paths of Whale Sharks and their behavioral and feeding habits.[4][5] He has mentioned how important it is to keep the oceans clean because Whale Sharks are filter feeders and consume microplastics, which can harm and kill the shark.[7] He taught through the AQUAVET program and was a faculty member for Biology at Georgia Institute of Technology, Neuroscience at Georgia State University, Anatomic Pathology at UGA, and Marine Science at Stony Brook University.[3] After 17 years of researching and working at the Georgia Aquarium, he left and joined the Museum of Science and History in Jacksonville, FL in 2020. He became the CEO of the museum on February 5, 2024, and is continuing his research at the museum.[8][6] He is working on a MOSH Genesis Project to improve the Museum and studies that can be found in those topics and areas.[9] Dr. Dove believes that museums play a huge part in the way communities live and grow. His understanding and doctorate in subjects regarding marine life contribute significantly to helping with future projects.[6] Awards and publications
