No Broke Boys
"No Broke Boys" is a song by American singer-songwriter Tinashe. It was released as the third single from her seventh studio album, Quantum Baby on October 18, 2024 via her independent label Tinashe Music Inc. and Nice Life Recording Company. The song was written by Tinashe, Ricky Reed, and Phoelix, and was produced by Reed, Phoelix, and Zack Sekoff.[1] BackgroundThe song was confirmed for release on August 1, 2024 when Tinashe revealed it on the track listing of Quantum Baby. [2] On August 12, Tinashe went live on Instagram and revealed that the concluding chorus of the song was inspired by Janet Jackson's 1998 single "Go Deep". The final chorus includes crowd vocals from Tinashe, her best friend Alicia, and her cousin Nakisa.[3] Critical receptionThe song was met with generally mixed reviews. Upon his review of the song's parent album, Anthony Fantano of The Needle Drop claimed "It's actually memorable. It's actually snappy while still being very smooth and low-key. I wish more songs on the record hit the balance that this one does. In fact, that's what made so much of BB/Ang3l so good".[4] Soul In Stereo's Edward Bowser reviewed the song and stated "The energetic production is a welcome change of place and like many of the better songs on the album, it's undeniably catchy".[5] Pitchfork's Tarisai Ngangura claimed the song was "not deep enough to jolt any festering memories".[6] Nick Seip of Slant Magazine described the song as "infectious" and called it "an empowering earworm", comparing it to the 1999 TLC hit song, "No Scrubs".[7] Music videoTinashe initially released a lyric video to the song on August 29, 2024.[8] She confirmed the song would be accompanied with a music video on October 4 via her TikTok. In Los Angeles, she previewed the video for her audience at the Greek Theatre on October 17, while on her Match My Freak: World Tour. The video premiered on her Vevo channel the following day. It was directed by Aerin Moreno and was choreographed by Monica Douglas. The video referenced the 2000 film Bring It On, with one cheer team wearing white uniforms and the other team wearing black uniforms. Tinashe portrays the captain of the white-uniformed cheer team.[9] Live performancesTinashe first performed the song on her Match My Freak: World Tour on October 14, 2024. She later performed at the 2024 KIIS-FM Jingle Ball on December 19 in Atlanta and Miami.[10] The song was also performed at Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve celebration, marking her first televised performance of the song.[11] Credits and personnel
