Template talk:Ranks and Insignia of NATO Armies/OR/Canada

Untitled

The rank equivalencies do not mesh properly with the pictures. Master Warrant Officer should be OR-8 not OR-9; WO should be OR-7, not OR-8; Sgt should be OR-6, not OR-7; MCpl should be OR-5, not half OR-5 & half OR-6; Cpl should be OR-4, not OR-5, Pte should be OR-3, not OR-4; Pte(B) should be OR-2, not OR-3 and Pte(R) should be OR-1, not OR-2. I am, however unable to change the diagram due to programming ineptitude. I would be grateful if someone could fix this for me.— Preceding unsigned comment added by OwenHerold (talkcontribs) 14:07, 23 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Good catch. But there is a discrepancy to be resolved between the National Defence Act (NDA) and STANAG 2116 regarding CAF NCM ranks. Although the NDA does not designate Private (Recruit), it is certainly used in real life in all the CAF elements. And I'm not sure how the RCN actually refers to it's OR-1 now that the ranks have gone gender neutral. Additionally, STANAG 2116 does indeed list Private Recruits as OR-1 and on from there, including a required note about Sgt being OR-5 only during their first 3 years in rank, then they are OR-6. Not sure if the template can be adjusted accordingly. I was partially through updating this when my change was reverted by @Skjoldbro:. At a minimum, the ranks from OR-2 upwards need to be corrected even if there is disagreement about OR-1 existing. CAF RCN MARS (talk) 22:59, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Per my edit summary: The last time Recruits were listed in STANAG 2116 as OR-1 was in ed. 5. The current ed. 7 of this year makes no mention concerning this rank.[1] Additionally, there is no mention of the rank in the official source listed on this template. I think that the Sergeant#Canada is in more need of improvement as it is completely unsourced and makes no mention of this either. Skjoldbro (talk) 23:27, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. You are definitely correct. I was pointed to an old STANAG version by someone hoping I could change the template. Thanks for including your more recent source. I wasn't even aware of Sergeant/PO2 being in two NATO grades until this issue came up. -Cheers! CAF RCN MARS (talk) 23:39, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
