Document R.E.M. rock alternatiboren taldearen bosgarren estudio albuma izan zen. 1987an plazaratu zuten. Document Scott Littek, taldearekin batera, ekoiztu zuen lehen diskoa izan zen; kolabori hori hurrengo grabazioetan mantendu zen: Green, Out of Time, Automatic for the People, Monster eta New Adventures in Hi-Fi.[1] Arrakasta handia izan zen. Album honekin R.E.M. taldeak bere lehen Top 10 Estatu Batuetako zerrendetan lortu zuten. "The One I Love" abestiarekin lehen platinozko diskoa lortu zuten.
Izenburua
Jatorriz, albumaren azalean mezu hau agertu behar zen: "File Under Fire" (Su azpiko dokumentua); nolabait, Michael Stiperentzat diskoaren abesti nagusia zenari erreferentzia eginez. Antzeko testu Recknoning bigarren albumean agertua zen: "File Under Water" (Ur azpiko dokumentua); Eponymous diskoan, bestetik, hau irakutzen da: "File Under Grain" (Alearen azpiko dokumentua).
