Gigahertza (GHz) hertz frekuentzia neurtzeko unitatearen multiplo bat da eta Hz-ren baliokidea da. Beraz, nanosegundo bateko oszilazio periodoa du. Unitatea 1930ean proposatu zuen Nazioarteko Batzorde Elektroteknikoko Kantitate eta Unitate Elektriko eta Magnetikoetarako Batzorde Teknikoak, eta 1935ean sartu zen Unitate Sistema Teknikoaren barruan[1].
Gigahertzetik gertu dauden irrati-uhinak mikrouhin deritze. 1 GHz-ko mikrouhin batek 30 cm-ko luzera du eta 3 GHz 10 cm-ko beste bat oso erabiliak dira danbor itxura duen antena paraboliko baten bidezko komunikazioetan.
