Haptenoak pisu molekular txikiko substantzia kimikoak dira (10.000 dalton baino gutxiagokoak) antigorputzen sorrera eragiten ez dutenak bakarrik daudenean, baina beste molekula batzuekin lotzen direnean (proteinekin, esaterako) antigorputzak sortzen dituztenak.
Haptenoek ezin dute berez antigorputzen sorrera induzitu, molekula txikiak direlako, eta horrenbestez ez dira benetako antigenoak. Baina antigorputzekin erreakzionatzeko ahalmena dute. Gainera, proteina batzuei akoplatzen direnean (albuminari, esaterako) konplexuak bere aurkako antigorputzen sintesia eragiten du, hots, gaitasun immunogenikoa dauka.
