Kobold alemaniar jatorriko hitz bat da, germaniar mitologiako "iratxo"rentzat erabilia. Kobaltoa izendatzeko erabili zuten.[1]
Normalean ikusezina den arren, kobold bat animalia, su, gizaki eta bela moduan gauza daiteke. Kobold-en irudikapen ohikoenak haur txikien tamainako giza irudi gisa erakusten dituzte. Giza etxeetan bizi diren kobold-ek nekazarien arropa janzten dute; meategietan bizi direnak konkortuta eta itsusiak dira; itsasontzietan bizi diren kobold-ek pipak erretzen dituzte eta marinelen arropak janzten dituzte.
Kobold-en sinesmena, gutxienez XIII. mendekoa da, noiz alemaniar nekazariek euren etxeetarako kobold irudiak zizelkatzen zituzten. Praktika pagano horiek, beharbada, antzinako Greziako kobalo bihurrietan, antzinako Erromako etxeko lar eta penateetan, edo kofewalt izeneko germaniar izpiritu batean zeuden sineskizunetatik eratorriak izan ziren.
