Kolugoak Dermoptera ordenaren barruan dagoen Cynocephalidae familia bakarra osatzen duten bi espezieei izendatzeko erabiltzen den izena da. Bi espezietako bakoitzak bere genero propioa du. Askotan lemur hegalari moduan ere ezagutzen dira, nahiz eta ez diren zehazki lemurrak, azken hauek primateak baitira. Duten hegalari esker planeatzeko gai dira, baina ezin dezakete hegan egin.
35-40 zentimetro artean neurtzen dute eta kilo bat edo bi pisa ditzakete. Hegal egiteko patagio izeneko mintza dute, eta kasu hauetan geometrikoki posiblea den handiena da. Hedatzen dutenean 70 metro arte planea ditzakete.
