Laiotza[1], halaber ospela, ainubea edo uspela, eguzki-erradiazio txikiena jasotzen duen mendialdea da. Ipar hemisferioan mendi baten ipar isurialdea da, eta hegoaldekoa baino hotzago eta ilunagoa izaten da; hego hemisferioan, berriz, hego isurialdea izaten da.[2] Kontrakoa denari —eguzki gehien jotzen duen isurialdeari— egutera deritzo.
Iparraldeko orientazioak itzal handiagoa du, hezetasuna hobeto kontserbatzen da, eta hotzagoa izaten da.
