Iturri nagusiak Roman d´Alexandre frantsesa, eta Gualterio de Châtillonen Alexandreis latinezko poema dira, azken hau Kinto Kurtzio Ruforen lanean oinarritua zelarik. Mazedoniako buruzagia alegiazko elementuez inguraturik ageri da, egiazko nortasuna desitxuratuz eta haren biografia abentura eleberri bihurtuz: Alexandroren amazonen aurkako borroka, Babiloniako ikusgarrien deskribapena, hegan egiteko makina, etab.
