Markes aitoren semeen artean, dukearen eta kondearen arteko maila da. Markesaren emaztea edo berez markes titulua duen andrea markesa da.[1]
Bere mendeko lurraldeak markeserri du izena. Lehendabiziko markesak Inperio Karolingioaren garaian agertu ziren eta bere administraziopean marka edo mugaldeko eremu (adibidez Hispaniako Marka edo Bretainiako marka) bat zuten jaunak ziren.[2] Hauek antzinako frantsesez XIII. mendearen amaieran eta XIV. mendearen amaieran marchis izena zuten.
