Nelumbo lore ikusgarriak dituen uretako landareen generoa da. Kideei loto deitzen zaie eskuarki, nahiz eta "loto" izena beste landare eta landare-multzo batzuk izendatzeko erabiltzen den, loto generoa barne, zeinarekin ez duen inolako loturarik. Kanpoko itxuragatik, Nymphaeaceae (igebelarrak) familiakoen antzekoak dira, baina Nelumbo ez da Nymphaeaceae-ren ahaidea.[1] "Nelumbo" hitza sinhalazko නෙළුම් neḷum hitzetik dator, bertoko lotoa- Nelumbo nucifera- duen izen herrikoitik hain zuzen ere.[2]
Gaur egun bi loto-espezie daude: ekialdeko, hegoaldeko eta hego-ekialdeko Asiako Nelumbo nucifera, bietan ezagunena dena. Eskuarki landua da; elikagai gisa jaten eta txinatar medikuntza tradizionalean erabiltzen dute. Espezie hau India eta Vietnamgo lore nazionala da.
Bestea Nelumbo lutea da, Ipar Amerikako eta Karibeko espezie bat hain zuzen ere. Bi espezie alopatriko horiek gurutzatuz hibridoak sortu dira.
Kretazeoko, Paleogenoko eta Neogenoko estratuetan hainbat espezie fosil daude Eurasia osoan eta Ipar Amerikan.
