Okotea laurazeoen familiako zenbait zuhaitz eta zuhaixkaren genero-izena da.
Ezaugarriak
Hosto gogor larrukarak dituzte, txandakatuak eta adarren alde banatan kokatuak. Lorea hostoen oinean edo adar txikien puntetan izan dezakete; lore txikiak dituzte gehienek.
280 bat okotea-espezie ezagutzen dira; gehienak Ameriketako tropiko aldeko lurraldeetan hazten dira, baina Afrikako iparraldean ere hazten dira batzuk.
Okotea batzuen azala eta fruituak sukarra kentzeko erabiltzen dituzte Amerikako indiarrek.
