Batetik, H3O+ formula duen katioi monobalenteaari, uraren protonaziotik sortzen denari, esaten zaio. Ur puruan eta ur-disoluzio guztietan aurkitzen da. Honi hidronio ere esaten zaio.

Bestetik, oxonio katioiaren hidrogeno-atomo bat edo biak erradikalez ordezkatzean lortutako konposatu organikoei esaten zaie. R3O+ gisa adierazten da. Adibidez. metiloxonioa, (CH3)H2O+. Oxigenoaren ordezkatziale guztiak alkiloak direnean alkiloxonio esaten zaie.
