Palaeoptera (grezieratik, palaeos, antzinakoa eta pteron, hegoa) intsektu Pterygota talde bat dira. Askotan hauen artean antzinakoenak direla esaten da, ezin dituztelako euren hegoak abdomenean bildu, Neopterako guztiek egin dezaketen bezala. Hegoen biltze gaitasun hori eta hegaz egiteko gihar sistemak argi uzten du Neoptera talde monofiletiko bat dela.
Baina hegoak biltzeko ezintasuna bere horretan plesiomorfikoa da, hau da, antzinako egoera hori da, beraz kladistikaren arabera ez da baliagarria talde monofiletiko bat izendatzeko. Beraz Ephemeroptera eta Odonata biltzeko dagoen arrazoi bakarra ez dago oinarrituta arbaso komun batean. Beraz Paleoptera albo batera utzi behar den talde parafiletiko bat dela esan daiteke.
