Pierolapithecus catalaunicus primate hominoideo espezie bat da, desagertuta dagoena. Haren lehen fosilak 2002ko abenduan aurkitu zituzten zabortegi bateko obra bateko langileek eta Salvador Moyà-Solàk zuzendutako paleoantropologo-talde batek. Duela 13 milioi urte inguru (Miozenoaren erdialdea), gutxi aztertutako garaia, bizi izan zen ale ezagun bakarrari «Pau» izena jarri zioten. Hipotesi baten arabera, gizakiaren eta tximino handien (gorilak, txinpantzeak, bonoboak eta orangutanak) arbaso komuna izan zitekeen[1]. 2023an aurpegiaren berreraikuntza iragarri zuten[2].
Aurkikuntzaren deskribapena Science aldizkariaren 2004ko azaroaren 19ko edizioan argitaratu zen lehen aldiz. Izen generikoa aurkikuntza Kataluniako Els Hostalets de Pierola (Bartzelona) udalerritik hartu zuten. Fosil-multzoa IPS 21350 gisa katalogatu zen.
