Rose Porter New Yorken jaio zen 1845eko abenduaren 6an.[2] Bere aita, David Collins Porter, neworkar aberatsa zen eta 1845ean hil zen, Rose haurra zela. Bere ama, berriz, Rose Anne Hardy zen, Ingalaterrako armadako ofizial baten alaba. Lehen urteak New Yorken eta Catskills-on-the-Hudsongo udako etxean eman zituen. New Yorken ikasi zuen, baina urtebete atzerrian eman zuen. Ikasketak amaitu ondoren, New Havenera (Connecticut) joan zen bizitzera, eta ama hil zitzaionean, hiri horretan geratu zen zerbitzariekin.[1][3]
