Ruminococcus generoa bakterio Gram positiboz osatuta dago, koko itxurakoak. Heste-floraren partaidea da eta anaerobio hertsia.
Ruminococcus-ek polisakarido konplexu batzuk degradatzen ditu ugaztunen digestio-aparatuan, garrantzi handiko kate laburreko gantz-azidoak sortuz (butiratoa, adibidez, heste-hormaren osotasuna mantentzen duena) [1]. Hausnarkarien errumenean Ruminococcus-ek zelulosa digeritzen du [2].
