Sumaco estratu-sumendi simetriko eta isolatu bat da, Ekuadorreko sumendi-ardatz nagusian dagoena. Bere arrokak Andeetako sumendi gehienetatik oso desberdinak dira, konposizio andesitikorik ez duelako, basanita eta arroka fonolitikoaren mesedetan. Sumaco oso basotsua da eta bere gailur zabaleko kraterrean kono txiki bat du. Erupzio historiko bat gertatu zen 1895 inguruan (± 30 urte).
Ekologia
Sumaco Erdialdeko Mendikatetik isolatuta dago, Cosanga eta Quijos ibaien behe-lurraldeko haranaren bidez.[1] 6000 landare baskular espezie baino gehiago daude, 90 espezie endemiko baino gehiago barne.[2] Animalia endemiko batzuk ere badaude, besteak beste, Osornophryne sumacoensis apoa Sumakoko ekialdeko magaletik bakarrik ezagutzen da, eta Pristimantis ernesti igel lapurra Sumakoko gailurretik bakarrik ezagutzen da.[3][4]
