Tangutak etnia historiko bat izan ziren, Barne Mongoliako hegoaldean bizi izan zirenak, Zetaren Ibilbidearen amaieran, baina Qinghaiko hego-ekialdeko eta Sichuango ipar-mendebaldeko estepetan eta mendietan izan zuten jatorria.[1] Daniel C. Waugh-en arabera, tanguten jatorrizko gunea Sichuango mendebaldeko goi-lautadetan zegoen.[2]
Nekazaritza ureztatuan eta artzaintzan aritu ziren, Asia Erdialdearen eta Txinaren arteko merkataritzan bitartekari lanak eginez.
Budismoa estatuko erlijiotzat hartu zuten. Bere idazkera sistema propioa sortu zuten eta 1038an bere Mendebaldeko Xiako Inperioa (Tangut Inperioa) aldarrikatu zuten, 200 urte inguruz batasun politiko bezala existitu zena.
