სამხრეთ იტალიის დაპყრობა ნორმანების მიერ გრძელდებოდა 999 წლიდან 1139 წლამდე, ამ დროის მანძილზე სხვადასხვა დამპყრობელმა არაერთი ცნობილი ბრძოლა გადაიხადა.
მოხეტიალე ნორმანული სამხედრო ძალები ჩავიდნენ სამხრეთ იტალიაში, რომლებმაც იტალიელებს საკუთარი თავი დაქირავეებული არმიის სახით გააცნეს და უთხრეს რომ ბიზანტიის საქმეში იყვნენ ჩართულები, ამ ყველაფრის პარალელურად, ისინი ყველა საჭირო ინფორმაციას აწვდიდნენ თავიანთ ქვეყანას, ხმელთაშუა ზღვის სანაპიროებზე არსებული ქვეყნების შესახებ.[1][2] ნორმანები ჩავიდნენ იქ ჯგუფებად. ეს ჯგუფები გაერთიანდნენ რამდენიმე ადგილას, შექმნეს საკუთარი საერისთავოები და სახელმწიფოები. შემდგომში აწ უკვე გაერთიანებულ ჯგუფებს საერთო ინტერესები აღმოაჩნდათ და სხვის ტერიტორიაზე დამოუკიდებლობის სტატუსიც კი მოიპოვეს, ჩამოსვლიდან 50 წლის განმავლობაში.[2]
ნორმანთა მიერ ინგლისის დაპყრობისგან განსხვავებით, როდესაც ინგლისი ერთი გადამწყვეტი ბრძოლის შედეგად დაეცა და მის დაპყრობას რამდენიმე წელი დასჭირდა, სამხრეთ იტალიის დაპყრობას ათწლეულები დასჭირდა, ხოლო ამ წლების მანძილზე უამრავი ბრძოლა წარიმართა, რომელთაგან რამდენიმე მათგანი გადამწყვეტიც კი აღმოჩნდა. იტალიაში არსებული ნორმანული სახელმწიფოები, ტერიტორიებს დამოუკიდებლად იპყრობდნენ, შემდეგ კი ისინი გაერთიანდნენ. ინგლისის დაპყრობასთან შედარებით, იტალიის დაპყრობა დაუგეგმავი და არაორგანიზებული იყო, თუმცა საბოლოოდ დამპყრობელთათვის ყველაფერი იდეალური გამოვიდა.
