The Outer Limits var en amerikansk mystery-, skrekk- og sciencefiction-serie som gikk på ABC fra 1963 til 1965. Serien bestod av en rekke enkeltstående historier som blandet sjangere som science fiction, skrekk og mystery. Serien ble skapt av Leslie Stevens og hadde flere likhetstrekk med klassiske serier som The Twilight Zone og Night Gallery.
Slik som The Twilight Zone hadde The Outer Limits en åpningsmonolog og en sluttmonolig – den såkalte "Control Voice". Serien skiller seg imidlertid fra The Twillight Zone ved at den ikke bruker ironi. Serien hadde han langt mer filosofisk tilnærming der mange av episodene spilte på mørke krefter i og utenfor mennesket. Alt satt inn i en sciencefiction-kontekst.
Hver episode ble introdusert av en stemme som kalles for "Control Voice", og som sier dette til seerne:
There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear.
