Localisacion
La lenga es parlada dins lo Kumaon, una region que correspond a la division administrativa de meteis nom de l'estat d'Uttarakhand e que compren los districtes d'Almora, de Bageshwar, de Champawat, de Nainital, de Pithoragarh e d'Udham Singh Nagar[1].
Classificacion
Lo kumaoni fa partida de las lengas indoarianas del nòrd, una branca de las lengas indoarianas, que fan partida de la familha indoeuropèa. Es pròche del garhwali.
