Los occitans son un grop etnic[1] europèu[2] originari del nòrd-oèst de Mediterranèa, que demòra dins sa majorat al sud de França, e a un gra mendre dins de territòris frontalièrs d'aqueste estat, una zona nomenada collectivament Occitània.[3] Partejan una meteissa lenga romanica, l'occitan, qu'es a l'ora d'ara parlada per una minoritat de la populacion, que segon d'unas fonts seriá de 500 000 [4] e segon d'autras de 2 milions, per un total de 16 milions d'abitants. La majoritat vivon dins l’Estat francés e son, doncas, ciutadans franceses;[5] los autres estats amb ciutadans occitanoparlants son Espanha (dins la Val d'Aran), Itàlia (Valadas Occitanas, situada a la frontièra italofrancesa) e Mónegue.[6] De comunautats emigradas an servat mai o mens de temps la lenga occitana, dins las ciutats bèlas de periferia (Turin, Còni, Grasanòbol, Lion, Barcelona, París) mas tanben en Alemanha (glossonès vaudés), en Uruguai o als Estats-Units d'America.
