Recife es la capitala de Pernambuco. Sa populacion èra estimada a 1 400 000 abitants, en 2005. Sa superfícia totala es de 218 km².
Foguèt fondada en 1537 pels portugueses, ocupada pels neerlandeses entre 1630 e 1654, e tornarmai ocupada pels portugueses aprèp la derrota dels neerlandeses. Foguèt transformada en vila en 1823.
Actualament es un important centre de comèrci, servicis, industria e torisme del Nòrd-Èst de Brasil.
