Sphenodon es un genre de reptils endemics de Nòva Zelanda, qu'aperten a la familha Sphenodontidae. La significacion del nom comun ven del maòri e vòl dire "esquina espinosa". A primièra vista (per convergéncia evolutiva) son semblants a las iguanas, mas i son pas aparentats. Mesuran aperaquí 70 cm de long e son insectivòrs e carnivòrs.
Vertadièr fossil vivent, uèi genre unic (amb una sola espècia actuala Sphenodon punctatus) de l’òrdre dels rinocefals (Rhynchocephalia), sonat tanben Sphenodontia), qu'èra comun i a 200 milion d'annadas[1].
Malgrat la semblança, es pas un lausèrt, mas un parent pròche dels squamata qu'amassan los lausèrts e las serps.
