Campionatul Mondial de Handbal Masculin este organizat de Federația Internațională de Handbal începând cu anul 1938.

Primul Campionat Mondial a avut loc în Germania în 1938, care implică patru echipe din Europa. De-a lungul istoriei lor, Campionatul Mondial a fost dominată de echipe europene, orice medalie a fost încă să fie câștigată de non-europeni.

De-a lungul anilor, organizarea Campionatelor Mondiale s-a schimbat. Inițial, au existat jocuri de grup, atât în rundele preliminare și principalele, dar mai recent un sistem knock-out a fost aplicată după runda preliminară.

La ediția din acest an, echipa națională a Danemarcei devine prima națională care reușește să câștige trei finale consecutive cu trei adversari diferiți.
