The යනු ඉංග්රීසි භාෂාවේ එකම නිශ්චයාර්ථය හඟවන අව්යය පදය (definite article) යි. පෙර සඳහන් කරන ලද පුද්ගල(යන්) හෝ දේ(වල්), යළි හැඳින්වීමේ දී/දැක්වීමේ දී හෝ අසන්නාට හෝ කියවන්නාට හුරුපුරුදු යැයි සළකනු ලබන විට දී The පදය භාවිත වෙයි. ඉංග්රීසි භාෂාවේ වඩාත්ම බහුලව භාවිත වන පදය මෙයයි. The පදය, යම් නාම පදයකට ඉදිරියෙන් යොදනු ලබයි.
ඒක වචන හෝ බහු වචන නාම පද, ස්ත්රී ලිංග හෝ පුරුෂ ලිංග නාම පද සහ ඉංග්රීසි භාෂාවේ ඕනෑම අක්ෂරයකින් ආරම්භ වන නාම පද යන මේ සියල්ලක් සමඟ ම The පදය භාවිත කළ හැකි වෙයි. භාෂා ගණනාවකම ස්ත්රී ලිංග හා පුරුෂ ලිංග නාම පද සහ සංඛ්යා සඳහා විවිධ අව්යය පද භාවිත වෙයි. මේ අනුව ඉංග්රීසි භාෂාවේ The පදයෙහි භාවිතය ඒ සියල්ලට ම වඩා වෙනස් වෙයි. The පදය උච්ඡාරණය කරනු ලබන ආකාර 2ක් පවතී.
The භාවිත වන අවස්ථා කිහිපයක්
- යම් දෙයක් හෝ දේවල් සමූහයක් අද්විතීය වන්නේ නම් හෝ අද්විතීය යැයි පොදුවේ සළකනු ලබන්නේ නම්,
- උදා: the earth, the sea, the stars.
- කලින් සඳහන් කිරීම නිසා අසන්නා හෝ කියවන්නා නිශ්චිත වශයෙන් දන්නා යමක් යළි සඳහන් කිරීමේදී,
- උදා: His bike struck a tree; you can still see the mark on the tree.
- වාක්ය ඛණ්ඩයක් මගින් නාම පදයකට නිශ්චිත ස්වභාවයක්/ස්වරූපයක් දෙනු ලබන විට දී,
- උදා: the girl in black, the man in the checked sarong.
- පිහිටුම/අයිතිය/හුරුපුරුදු බව අනුව (by reason of locality), යම් නාම පදයක් මගින් එකම දෙයක් පමණක් අඟවනු ලබන විට දී,
- උදා: Ann is in the garden (the garden of this house),
- Please pass the wine. (the wine on the table),
- the postman (the one who comes to us),
- the car (our car), the newspaper (the one we read),
- He's in the harbour. (අසන්නා හෝ කියවන්නා ඒ කුමන වරාය දැයි නිශ්චිත වශයෙන් දන්නා විට),
- The newspaper is torn.
- Superlatives (ඉතා උසස්ම ගුණය, තත්ත්වය හෝ ප්රමාණය දක්වන පද) සහ first, second වැනි පද සමඟ,
- උදා: the first day of school, the only way
- "The + ඒක වචන නාම පදය" මගින් සතුන් හෝ දේවල් සමූහයක් නියෝජනය කෙරෙයි.
- උදා: The IUCN reclassifies the Giant panda as a vulnerable species.
- නමුත් "man" යන පදය පහත පරිදි යෙදෙන විට the භාවිත නොවෙයි.
