The Race (Tay-K song)
"The Race" is the first single off of American rapper Tay-K's first and only mixtape Santana World. The song was released on June 16, 2017. The song was able to make it to #44 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[1][2] While he was under house arrest for capital murder charges, Tay-K wrote on Twitter "fuck dis house arrest shit fuck 12 they gn hav 2 catch me on hood" and cut off his ankle monitor.[3] He recorded "The Race" while he was on the run from police. In the chorus of the song, Tay-K raps "Fuck a beat, I was tryna beat a case. But I ain't beat that case, bitch I did the race."[4] On June 30, 2017, a music video for the song was released. In the video, Tay-K is seen rapping and walking through a house while holding and aiming guns. The music video was shot while he was on the run from police. The video was used as evidence in his murder trial.[5] On July 23, 2019, Tay-K was sentenced to 55 years in prison for murder. During his sentencing, "The Race" was used as evidence in court with the lyrics from the chorus: "Pop a nigga, then I go out my way. Do the dash, then I go out the way. Rob a nigga shoes, rob a nigga lace. We tryna see a hunnid bands in our face." viewed as him bragging about his crimes.[4] References
