สิ่งมีชีวิตตัวแบบ หรือ สิ่งมีชีวิตแบบจำลอง^[1] (อังกฤษ: model organism) เป็นสปีชีส์สิ่งมีชีวิตที่ไม่ใช่มนุษย์ ที่ใช้อย่างกว้างขวางในการศึกษาเพื่อเข้าใจปรากฏการณ์ทางชีววิทยาต่าง ๆ โดยคาดหวังว่า สิ่งที่ค้นพบในแบบจำลองจะช่วยให้เข้าใจธรรมชาติของสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่น ๆ^[2] สิ่งมีชีวิตแบบจำลองจะเป็นแบบยังมีชีวิตอยู่ และได้ใช้อย่างกว้างขวางในงานวิจัยโรคมนุษย์ที่การทดลองในมนุษย์เป็นไปไม่ได้หรือไม่ถูกจริยธรรม^[3] กลยุทธ์นี่ใช้ได้ก็เพราะสิ่งมีชีวิตทั้งหมดสืบเชื้อสายร่วมกันจากบรรพบุรุษเดียวกัน โดยได้อนุรักษ์วิถีเมแทบอลิซึม วิถีพัฒนาการ และกระบวนการอื่น ๆ ทางพันธุกรรมตลอดวิวัฒนาการ^[4]

แม้การศึกษาสิ่งมีชีวิตตัวแบบจะให้ข้อมูลที่ดี แต่ก็ต้องระวังเมื่อประยุกต์ใช้กับสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่น ๆ^[5]^{[ต้องการเลขหน้า]} ในการวิจัยโรคมนุษย์ สิ่งมีชีวิตตัวแบบจะทำให้เข้าใจกระบวนการของโรคดีขึ้นโดยไม่ต้องเสี่ยงทำอันตรายแก่มนุษย์ สปีชีส์ที่เลือกปกติจะผ่านเกณฑ์ความสมมูลทางอนุกรมวิธาน (taxonomic equivalency) บางอย่างกับมนุษย์ คือสัตว์จะมีปฏิกิริยาทางสรีรภาพต่อโรคหรือต่อการรักษา ในรูปแบบที่คล้าย ๆ กับของมนุษย์ ถึงแม้จะไม่สามารถระบุได้อย่างชัดเจนว่า กระบวนการทางชีววิทยาที่พบในสัตว์ตัวแบบจะเป็นอย่างเดียวกันในมนุษย์ แต่วิธีการรักษาและยาจำนวนมากที่ใช้ในโรคมนุษย์ ก็ได้พัฒนาอาศัยแนวคิดที่ได้จากสัตว์ตัวแบบเป็นบางส่วน^[6]^[7]

มีแบบจำลองโรค 3 ประเภทหลัก ๆ คือ homologous (กำเนิดเดียวกัน), isomorphic (สมสัณฐาน) และ predictive (พยากรณ์) สัตว์จำลองแบบกำเนิดเดียวกันจะมีเหตุโรค อาการ และการรักษาเหมือนกับของมนุษย์ที่มีโรค สัตว์จำลองแบบสมสัณฐานจะมีอาการและการรักษาเหมือนกัน สัตว์จำลองแบบพยากรณ์จะมีสภาพเพียงแค่บางอย่างที่คล้ายกับมนุษย์ผู้มีโรค แต่ก็มีประโยชน์ในการคาดหมายกลไกต่าง ๆ เกี่ยวกับโรค^[8]
