เดรดนอต

เดรดนอต (อังกฤษ: dreadnought) เป็นเรือประจัญบานชนิดที่แพร่หลายที่สุดในต้นคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 20 เรือลำแรกของรุ่น เดรดนอต ของราชนาวี สร้างความประทับใจแรงกล้าต่อจิตใจของประชาชนเมื่อปล่อยลงน้ำใน ค.ศ. 1906 จนเรือประจัญบานคล้ายกันที่สร้างต่อมาถูกเรียกรวม ๆ ว่า "เดรดนอต" และเรือประจัญบานก่อนหน้านี้เรียกว่า "ก่อนเดรดนอต" (pre-dreadnought) การออกแบบของเดรดนอต มีลักษณะปฏิวัติสองอย่าง คือ แผนอาวุธ "ปืนใหญ่หมด" (all-big-gun) โดยมีปืนใหญ่กว้างปากลำกล้องหนักมากกว่าเรือก่อน ๆ และการขับเคลื่อนด้วยกังหันไอน้ำ เมื่อเดรดนอตกลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์สำคัญของอำนาจแห่งชาติ การมีเรือรบชนิดใหม่นี้กลายเป็นเชื้อสำคัญในการทวีความรุนแรงของการแข่งขันในทางอาวุธนาวิกระหว่างสหราชอาณาจักรและเยอรมนี ด้วยการปล่อยเรือลำเดียวลงน้ำ คือ เรือหลวงเดรดนอต ขนาดของอำนาจนาวิกก็ตั้งใหม่ชั่วคืน ผลคือ มีการแข่งขันเดรดนอตผุดขึ้นทั่วโลก รวมทั้งในทวีปอเมริกาใต้ ระหว่างสมัยก่อนสงครามโลกครั้งที่หนึ่ง การออกแบบหลัง ๆ เพิ่มขนาดอย่างรวดเร็วและใช้พัฒนาการด้านอาวุธ เกราะและการขับเคลื่อนตลอดสมัยเดรดนอต ภายในห้าปีเรือประจัญบานใหม่ก็เบียดเดรดนอตตกชั้นไป เรือทรงพลังกว่าเหล่านี้เรียก "ซูเปอร์เดรดนอต" (super-dreadnought) เดรดนอตดั้งเดิมส่วนใหญ่ถูกปลดหลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่หนึ่งยุติภายใต้เงื่อนไขของสนธิสัญญานาวิกวอชิงตัน แต่ยังมีการใช้ซูเปอร์เดรดนอตใหม่กว่าหลายลำตลอดสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง เดรดนอตลำเดียวที่ยังเหลือรอด คือ ยูเอสเอส เท็กซัส ตั้งอยู่ใกล้แหล่งประวัติศาสตร์รัฐสมรภูมิซันคารินโต (San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site)

การต่อเดรดนอตกินทรัพยากรมหาศาลในต้นคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 20 แต่มีการยุทธ์ระหว่างกองเรือเดรดนอตขนาดใหญ่ครั้งเดียว ในยุทธนาวีที่จัตแลนด์ ค.ศ. 1916 ทัพเรือบริติชและเยอรมันปะทะกันโดยไม่รู้แพ้ชนะ คำว่า "เดรดนอต" ค่อย ๆ เลิกใช้หลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่หนึ่ง โดยเฉพาะหลังสนธิสัญญานาวิกวอชิงตัน เพราะเรือประจัญบานที่เหลือแทบทั้งหมดต่างมีลักษณะของเดรดนอต คำนี้ยังใช้อธิบายเรือลาดตระเวนประจัญบาน (battlecruiser) ซึ่งเป็นเรืออีกชนิดที่เป็นผลของการปฏิวัติเดรดนอตด้วย^[1]
