El termine el é stat inventà del studioso de Preistoria John Lubbock te el 1865 in oposiẑion al tèrmine "Neolitico".
Tra le ère geològiche la corisponẑ a cuela del Pleistocene (da 2,58 milioni a 10 000 ani fa).
