Leyesaurus ("thằn lằn của (thành phố Balde de) Leyes") là một chi khủng long cơ bản trong họ Massospondylidae, được Apaldetti R. N. Martinez Alcober & Pol mô tả khoa học năm 2011.[1] Hóa thạch của loài khủng long nhỏ hơn này, sống ở kỷ Jura Hạ (dựa trên sự tương đồng giữa Leyesaurus và các loài sauropodomorph Hạ Jura, như Massospondylus và Adeopapposaurus), được phát hiện ở tỉnh San Juan, Argentina.
Miêu tả
Mẫu gốc được mẫu có dán nhãn PVSJ 706 bao gồm một bộ xương gần hoàn chỉnh và một số mảnh sau sọ (cột sống, đai, một phần của chi sau). Hộp sọ dài 18 cm và chiều dài của toàn bộ con vật khoảng 2,5 mét. Trọng lượng khoảng 70 kg.[2] Theo một ước tính khác, nó dài khoảng 2,1 mét.[3] Hóa thạch được phát hiện trong hệ tầng Quebrada del Barro, thuộc lưu vực Marayes-El Carrizal, được tìm thấy gần thị trấn Balde de Leyes, thuộc sở Caucete của tỉnh San Juan. Họ hàng gần nhất của Leyasaurus có thể là chi Adeopapposaurus.[4]
Từ nguyên
Leyesaurus được đặt tên lần đầu tiên bởi Cecilia Apaldetti, Ricardo N. Martinez, Oscar A. Alcober và Diego Pol vào năm 2011 và loài tiêu biểu là Leyesaurus marayensis. Tên chi nhằm tôn vinh gia đình Leyes, cư dân của thị trấn Balde de Leyes, người đã phát hiện ra mẫu gốc và thông báo cho các nhà cổ sinh vật học của Bảo tàng San Juan, và saurus, tiếng Hy Lạp có nghĩa là "thằn lằn".[4]
