Mullus surmuletus là một loài cá biển thuộc chi Mullus trong họ Cá phèn. Loài này được mô tả lần đầu tiên vào năm 1758.
Từ nguyên
Từ định danh surmuletus được ghép bởi hai âm tiết trong tiếng Pháp Trung cổ: sor ("nâu đỏ") và mulet ("cá phèn"), hàm ý đề cập đến màu sắc của loài cá này.[2]
Phân bố và môi trường sống
M. surmuletus có phân bố tập trung ở vùng đông bắc Đại Tây Dương, từ Na Uy và eo biển Manche, dọc Tây Phi đến Sénégal, bao gồm quần đảo Canaria và Madeira ngoài khơi, mở rộng vào các biển nội địa là Địa Trung Hải và Biển Đen.[1]
M. surmuletus sống trên nền cát và bùn, cá thể trưởng thành thường sống ở những vùng đáy gồ ghề, được tìm thấy ở độ sâu đến 409 m.[3]
Mô tả
Chiều dài cơ thể lớn nhất được ghi nhận ở M. surmuletus là 40 cm.[3]
Sinh thái
Thức ăn chủ yếu của M. surmuletus là các loài giáp xác nhỏ, giun nhiều tơ và thân mềm.[4] Tuổi thọ lớn nhất được ghi nhận ở M. barbatus là 11 năm tuổi.[3]
Ở Canaria, M. surmuletus đạt đỉnh điểm sinh sản vào tháng 3 và tháng 4.[5] Còn ở vịnh Saros, loài này lại đạt đỉnh sinh sản vào tháng 4 và tháng 5.[6]
Trong lúc M. surmuletus kiếm ăn, nhiều loài cá khác cũng bám theo nó để tận dụng cơ hội bắt mồi thoát ra do M. surmuletus làm xáo trộn nền đáy. Bên cạnh đó, trong quá trình bám theo, cá bàng chài cái Thalassoma pavo và Coris julis cũng sẽ ăn ký sinh bám trên cơ thể M. surmuletus, một hành vi thường thấy ở nhiều loài cá bàng chài còn nhỏ.[7]
Khai thác
M. surmuletus là một loài có vai trò quan trọng trong ngành đánh bắt quy mô nhỏ ở khu vực Địa Trung Hải và ngoài khơi đông bắc Đại Tây Dương. Ở Địa Trung Hải, loài cá này là mục tiêu chính của nhiều nghề đánh bắt cá tầng đáy và đang bị đánh bắt quá mức.[1]
